Dryer Vent Cleaning

Dryer vents can become partially or completely blocked by lint. The primary reasons to clean dryer vents are:

  • Dryers run less efficiently
  • Potential for fires

Dryer runs less efficiently

Blocked dryer vents cause the dryer to work harder to dry clothes because it damp air cannot escape as easily. Dryers have to run longer to dry clothes which uses more energy (higher utility bills) and results in more wear and tear on clothes.

Dryer vent fires

Blocked dryer vents cause a build up of heat in the duct work which can lead to fires. Lint is flammable and provides the initial fuel for a fire.

Factors that increase the chance of blocked dryer vents include:

  • The dryer is located a far away from the outside vent
  • The dryer ducts takes many turns before it reaches the outside
  • Flexible or corrugated duct work is used
  • Plastic dryer hose
  • Drying clothes that were soiled by flammable materials such as gasoline, oil, furniture stains or other chemicals

A couple signs that can be signals to home owners that their dryer vent may be blocked and should be inspected include clothes taking a long time to dry and the flap on the outside dryer vent not opening much when the dryer is running (indicates weak air flow through the vent).

Inspecting and cleaning dryer vents requires disconnecting the dryer from the dryer hose to gain access to the duct work. If the length of the duct work is not too long a home owner can often clean the ducts themselves. If a home owner cannot get access to the duct work or cannot see or reach the entire length of the duct a professional dryer vent cleaner should be consulted.
